Architecture in Black
Whether your BUILDING has a contemporary, traditional, or even rustic feel, a touch of black can make a bold visual statement. From building materials to accent colors and appliances, it’s easy to incorporate black COLOR PALETTE into your BUILDING OR HOME design.
BLACK PAINT TO MAKE A BUILDING FEEL MORE MODERN
There’s nothing like the sophisticated touch of black paint for the inside or outside of your building. When working with black paint, the balance of colors and contrast is key. It’s important to pay attention to the entire space when you’re looking to incorporate a black accent color.
BLDG Projects Chicago has designed many homes over the past few years that have taken advantage of the modern black paint trend. When it comes to adding black paint details, however, rather than paint the entire exterior black, try incorporating building materials that have a neutral tone. You can also use the method of all black everything for a more monotone look.
For example, when designing the single-family home below, we decided to change just the window trim and front door trim detail to black. Doing so added visual contrast to the natural wood porch, gray brick foundation, and dark gray siding – overall creating a much more refined look.
BLACK PAINT - GIVE NEW LIFE TO OLD BRICK
From single family to multi-units, BLDG Projects Chicago has completed hundreds of renovations to all brick homes - adding a fresh coat of black paint or stain is one of our favorite ways to boost curb appeal. Staining the brick exterior of an older home can instantly give new life to the building.
Painting brick is also an easy, cost-effective way to maintain a renovation budget. If your brick and mortar is in good shape, all you need to do is clean the surface area (efflorescence stains are common in Chicago!), repair minor holes that may appear with an acrylic caulk or mortar, prime the area you want to paint, and you’re essentially ready to go. Choosing the right shade of black is really the crucial step, and you must use a masonry paint.
There are so many shades of black to choose from, it’s important to consider a shade’s undertone. Take a look at all the options for black paint offered at a home improvement store below. Many have blue, green, or red undertones and can look completely different when seen in the natural light. Our favorite material is Anvil Black by James Hardie. You can select siding or panels in this color.
